National Honor Society
Membership in the National Honor Society is one of the highest honors that can be awarded to a high school student. The NHS has worked hard to bring the accomplishments of outstanding students to the attention of parents, administrators, teachers, peers and community at large. Chapters in more than 12,500 high schools across the nation strive to give practical meaning to the Society’s goals of scholarship, leadership, service, and character.
The Manville High School chapter of the National Honor Society is led by three student officers, with guidance provided by a faculty advisor. The primary focus of the Manville chapter is service: we play bingo with residents of a local nursing home, we rake leaves for senior citizens, we provide babysitting services so that parents can participate in PTA meetings at our elementary school, and we tutor our fellow students who may be struggling with their studies. As we enter the 2021-2022 school year under the impacts of the global pandemic, we are shifting our focus to service activities that can be accomplished in a virtual fashion.
Our student officers for the 2024-2025 school year will be elected early in the new school year.
The faculty advisor is Mrs. Gottfried.
The initial criterion for membership is academic achievement. Invitations to apply are sent in the fall to students who meet the cutoff requirements for their weighted grade point average or GPA. Student applications are then reviewed by a faculty committee, with a final decision confirmed by the principal. New members formally join the NHS at an induction ceremony in late November or early December.
