COLLEGE APPLICATION SUBMISSION GUIDE
The goal of a college application is to learn as much about the student as possible. All students are responsible for knowing the deadlines and for sending your parts of the application within the deadlines.
You are responsible for ensuring that colleges have received all the needed material.
Manville High School will be ELECTRONIC with our submission of official transcripts, Secondary School Reports (SSR), school profile, counselor letters of recommendation, teacher evaluation reports (TE), and teacher letters of recommendation. We will be using SCOIR eDocs for our electronic submission.
DETERMINE WHAT APPLICATION YOU WILL NEED TO SUBMIT
Not all colleges accept/utilize the Common Application. Please refer to the college/university website to determine their application process.
Create a Common Application Account
SOME ALTERNATIVE APPLICATIONS (do not accept Common Application):
-
Read over the first-time student guide to see what you will need to prepare
-
LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION
Request Letters of Recommendations (LoR)
-
Communicate (email/in-person) with potential recommender requesting a letter of recommendation
-
Complete a Resume or Brag Sheet (for a counselor recommendation, you will need to submit a MHS Brag Sheet)
-
Once a recommender agrees to submit a letter of recommendation on your behalf you will request this in SCOIR.
How to request a letter of recommendation in SCOIR (instructional video):
- Go to the My Colleges page.
-
Click Application Documents and then the Request a Recommendation button.
-
Search for the teacher you’re requesting to provide a recommendation.
-
Specify whether or not you’d like the recommendation to be for a specific college. If yes, select the college to which you would like the recommendation to be sent.
-
Follow up with teachers before the deadlines!
Please note students will be responsible for tracking to see if teachers have submitted their letter of recommendations into Scoir.
If a recommender is NOT MHS Faculty, have your recommender email their LoR to your counselor.
APPLICATION PROCESS
Students must create a Common Application Account if your school is a member of the Common Application. Scoir and Common Application do not link together.
Register on Common Application and make sure to SAVE your username and password.
Step 1: When in the Common Application, click on the “Common App” tab on the top of the screen, fill out the “Education” tab located on the left hand side. YOU MUST FILL OUT THE ENTIRE EDUCATION SECTION BEFORE MOVING FORWARD (there will be a green check mark next to education when completed).
Step 2: Once you have a green check next to Education, click on the “My Colleges” tab on the top of the screen and add a school that accepts the Common Application (i.e. Rowan).
Step 3: Once you have added your school, click on the “My Colleges” tab on the top of the screen, and then click on the “Assign Recommenders” tab. The FERPA (Family Education Rights & Privacy Act) is only completed once and covers all current and future college recommenders. Make sure that you complete each tab on the common application. You will know it is complete when you receive a green check mark.
-
Log into your Scoir Account
Username: School Email
Password: Temporary Password was sent in your email. Please update it to your own personal password. If you forgot your password we can resend it to you.
Step 4: When you log onto Scoir, click on My Profile. You will have to complete Personal Details such as the FERPA Agreement in Scoir. WE CANNOT SEND ANY DOCUMENTS UNTIL YOU HAVE SIGNED OFF ON YOUR FERPA. Following gives you the appropriate answers for the FERPA waiver. You MUST still complete this step. You must complete the Personal Bio, Academic Overview, Activities and Achievements, College Preferences. If you have no idea what Career path you would like to achieve, you can complete the Career Profile provided by YouScience.
ADDING College to Scoir
-
Click on My Colleges and there will be three columns listed: Suggested, Following, Applying. If you know what school you are interested in click Applying and add the College. It will ask you how you are applying: Type: Regular Decision, Early Action. Once you know which one you will be applying for, click on the type (most students apply Regular Decision or Early Action). Method: How you will be applying to the College/University: College Website, Coalition for College Access (Scoir will be partnering with Coalition in August, therefore, all your information on Scoir will be sent to the college if you’re applying to Coalition.)
WHAT TO DO ONCE YOU HAVE SUBMITTED YOUR APPLICATION

New Rutgers University Transcript Policy
- Students are to “self report” their high school courses and grades on the Rutgers University Application.
- Rutgers does not want an official transcript from Manville High School until the end of the year after you have committed to attending.
- Please fill out a Transcript Request Form for Rutgers. You will receive an unofficial copy of your transcript to use when self-reporting your grades.
New this fall, the Self-Reported Academic Record (SRAR) is a separate portion of the Rutgers application. The applicant will receive a confirmation email from Rutgers within 10 minutes of applying. Within the confirmation email will be a link for students to click on in order to self-report their grades in the SRAR. GPA and class rank will be requested as well as grades.
Manville High School urges students to complete this addendum to the application process for Rutgers. Students will be able to complete the application process with Rutgers quickly and get immediate confirmation that their SRAR has been received.
The unofficial copy of the MHS transcript is provided so that grades and the academic record are reported accurately.
Please see Mrs. Sulewski for more information and any questions.
Important College Resources
Scoir (pronounced “score”) is a college and career readiness platform that assists all Manville High School students in connecting academic achievement to post-secondary goals. It also helps Mrs. Sulewski, Mrs. Ruggini, Ms. Gentile, and Mrs. Roman ensure that all electronic documents (transcripts, letters of recommendation, secondary school reports, etc.) are sent to corresponding colleges, universities, and vocational schools in a timely manner.
You can sign in to Scoir here: https://app.scoir.com/signin

Option II
Option II
Option II is an innovative and creative way for students to earn high school credit for learning experiences outside the traditional classroom.
The purpose of Option II was established by the New Jersey Department of Education to satisfy high school graduation requirements while meeting and/or exceeding the New Jersey Student Learning Standards.
Option II allows students to obtain credit for learning experiences outside of the traditional classroom environment. Some of these experiences may provide real-world connections not available in the school setting. Other learning experiences may go beyond what the traditional high school can provide, allowing students to participate in research, international study, or college-level work.
Option II may include, but is not limited to, one or more of the following: independent study; online learning; study abroad programs; student exchange programs and structured learning experiences, including, but not limited to: work-based programs, internships, apprenticeships, and service-learning experiences.
If your child is interested in the Option II program, a separate application is required. The application must be submitted to the Counseling Department no later than two weeks after the start of each marking period. Your child must return it to the MHS Principal for review. The application can be picked up at the MHS Counseling Department.
